v 1.6.1 now always asks for zip password, then fails to open/view

Today I was using v 1.6.1 of BetterZip, to open an zip archive of my financial data that I had put a password on (for minimal security).

I had made two archives, one with password, one without.

When I try to open either one in Betterzip to view, it always asks for password, does not allow cancel out of the non-passworded zip file, and does not accept the correct password for the passworded zip file. It constantly puts up the "Enter the password" windoidm, with 'Cancel' that does not cancel, or 'OK' which cannot work with unneeded password.
In all cases now, I must use Activity Monitor to Force Quit.
Thankfully, it is now my standard op proc. to always put Activity Monitor in my Dock.

I can use The Unarchiver to extract both the regular and the password protected zip file, so I know the password is correct.

any thoughts about this?

OS X 10.4.9, iMac G5, BetterZip 1.6.1

Thank you.
best,

There is a bug in 1.6.1 that leads to such behavior, if you try to open a file with special characters, e.g., parentheses () in its file name or path. Please try to rename the archive and open it again. Does this solve the problem? That cancel doesn't really cancel will also be fixed in the next version.

By the way: You can hold down the Option key while right-clicking any running application in the dock. The context menu will now contain Force Quit instead of Quit.

Version 1.6.2 fixes this bug.

Mac OSX 10.4.11
BetterZip 1.7

I still have the problem that BetterZip requires always a password when opening any zip-file. For example, if that file was created in the Finder pull-down menu "create archive" without using a password (I use a German version of Mac OSX, so it could be that "create archive" has another name in the English OSX).
Any help is welcome,
Jochen

Betterzip 1.7.1 - Problem is still there. The filename is SIDPLAY4.zip, so no odd characters there.

I am unable to open the archive at this time.

Are you the original poster? If not, what system do you run BetterZip on? Do you have direct extraction enabled? Does BetterZip display the contents of the archive when you open it? Does it display the lock in the status bar light or dark?

After a quick search, I found this file: http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=65083. I can open and extract the file just fine with BetterZip 1.7.1, which of course doesn't mean much. Can you extract the file with Mac OS X' built-in archive utility (BOMArchiveHelper on Tiger)?

I have just started using Better Zip 1.8.3 trial version. I need it to decrypt AES256 Fox It pdf files sent by me from Windows using WinZip and I make a note of the password when I create it. I have sent unencrypted zipped files this way without problems

File shows correctly in better zip window - Adobe PDF doc and filename. When I put in password to open file, Better zip goes into a loop asking for password. Entering password again doesn't work - it just continues to ask until I cancel.

The file is there, the unencrypted filename shows up in the window once I put it in Better Zip but that's as far as I get.

Sending files from Ctitrx server; running on iMac 2.4ghz OS 10.5.8

Any ideas. If Better Zip works I intend to purchase it for the purpose above, mainly.

Kind regards Chris Gordon

Is the archive single-part or multi-part? Which version of WinZip do you use? Does the password contain any international (non-english) characters?

I'm attempting to use Betterzip to extract a .zip file that has a password (There is a "." in the password) and every time I get to the end of the extraction the password window pops again and it just hangs there.

I'm on a Mac Book Pro Version 10.5.8 with a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo

Solution?

If you are really using version 1.6.1, please upgrade to the latest version which does not have any problems with passwords containing non-English characters. But then, the dot never was one of these problematic characters. So, I guess the archive is damaged. If you downloaded it from the internet, try downloading again.

I am already using the latest version 1.8.3.

I can open the archive in betterzip and I can see all of the files within it. So it doesn't make sense that the file is damaged.

It's a file that was multiple pieces and i used Split&concat to join the files. Then I got the .zip file which is about 3.5 Gigs. I can see all of the files inside through betterzip and also it extracts to the point of only 2 mb's are left. That's when the password comes up again and the program does nothing unless I enter the password again and it just repeats.

The file doesn't seem to be damaged.

Does any of this help?

Thank you

Unfortunately, from your description, I am pretty sure that the archive is damaged. BetterZip would ask for the password at the beginning of the extraction process, since all files inside the archive are usually encrypted with the same password. The fact that BetterZip can open the archive and display its table of contents does not mean that the archive is undamaged.

Maybe the last part was missing when you joined them. For which, by the way, you don't need Split&Concat, because BetterZip can do that itself.

Have you tried to extract with another archiver, like the Unarchiver?
